Tuna is a delicious fish which is also a very useful tool for many people who are interested on getting their appropriate amount of daily protein. Every good thing though has a bad side. The bad side of tuna is that it was found to contain amounts of a metallic element called mercury. To be more precise it was found in many species of the water wildlife. After that discovery as usual panic mode ensued with people stopping consuming fish. Even today there is still a discussion about whether are we able to consume canned tuna on a daily basis or it should be avoided entirely.
The answer is simple though. It is true that over consumption of fish can lead to mercury poisoning as was shown by the case of Jeremy Piven .But considering that everything can cause problems in large amounts the question is how much is the safe amount of fish someone can consume in a weekly base. Many people claim that they don't have a problem by consuming one can of tuna or more daily but anecdotal personal experiences isn't enough to make certainties. Also let's not forget that every individual is different and there are a lot of factors which should be considered such as gender, weight etc. A very nice tool which gives results by just putting your weight and gender in it can be found here. Also here is a nice table with the mercury content of various fish accompanied
with a conclusion. From these two sources it should be easy to figure out how much fish you can consume.
PS.A very interesting commentary about the subject
