This week I saw the following video on YouTube demonstrating a robot prototype named PETMAN. It was created by Boston Dynamics and will be used for military testing and specific: “PETMAN simulates human physiology by controlling temperature, humidity and sweating inside the clothing to provide realistic test conditions” After I saw the video description I laughed so hard and then for a moment I went back to the 80s when we saw movies like Robocop and Terminator, battling for the good of the human race…
The funny thing about those two movies was the expectations created for robots and the evolving technology. They made people think like we could use them as butlers or on the battlefield in the 2020 or so, but 30 years after things are much different. Of course they are in great use, we use them in industry, on battlefield and in everyday life but still there is no AI that can match ours (not to mention that most of them are human controlled). Of course we had Kasparov battling computer intelligence and lost but it was a game meaning it had specific rules.
a) Energy consumption
Robots use A LOT more energy that we do, meaning they can’t be sustained
b) Energy source
As I prementioned there can’t be found an energy source powerful enough to power robots for a long time.
c) AI
If we want to see robots serving us or fighting in the battlefield there are many things that should be combined such as voice recognition, face recognition, pattern recognition, 3D area scan, movement and much more.
Mother nature, has created all of her children with care and wisdom and no human creation can match this.
