The Art of Marketing

I was inspired to write the following after the death of Steve Jobs and Dennis Ritchie.

Most of you already know Mr. Jobs. He was pronounced the mister perfect innovator, a modern pioneer and the co- founder of AppleWell, to be honest I liked him but not that much. I believe he was indeed ahead of his time on the 80s and 90s. What I really acknowledge about him is PIXAR and his Stanford speech. Have you ever seen some of PIXAR’s amazing animated clips like this or this? Not to mention the exceptional films they produced! Nevertheless, he was worshiped like a messiah by the mainstream media, something which I believe he didn’t deserve that much. In my humble opinion, he was a businessman who the last 10 years sold shiny and stylish gadgets and nothing more.

Now on the other hand I doubt most of you know anything about Dennis Ritchie (and I am proud to say, that I have some of his books in my library). Well if someone disserves to be called a pioneer and a modern messiah this is our guy! First of all, he created C programming language which is one of the most fundamental in computer science! Your mobile phone‘s software, many of your windows programs and many others applications are based on or created with C!  Also he was the founder of UNIX operating system, which is the capstone of computer science.

As you can see from the info above and from the wiki links, it seems that something is wrong.  On the one hand he have a businessman innovator (Jobs) and on the other a shaper of the modern world and a modern jesus of computer science (Richie). Well Jobs owned a company which sold products and so he ought to use the appropriate marketing techniques in order to increase his sales, but nevertheless it is amazing how much credit he got in comparison to Richie!!!

Now my point from the previous comparison. In life, even if you are the best in what you do, the best character, the best musician, the most beautiful person, the most completed human being in the hole universe, as long as you don’t know how to promote who you are, what you can do and what you have accomplished, there is a little chance to be given the right credit. That simple, that cruel, but nevertheless if you are that good, no matter how bad you have been diggen, there will always be some people who will see and recognize your value. Even if you are covered  by sand or dust, as long as you are a diamond, you will always shine. On the other hand, if you shine like a diamond, it is most likely you will be seen on a crown and be admired and praised by many, but you won’t have that value.

How to promote yourself is also a capacity, that not everybody has. You should have the abilility to stay out of the dust and shine by yourself. Then you can achieve everything you aim.

Sure it is a capacity Snoopy and something that more or less you can train yourself to have. Having both the value and be a crown jewel is way more than just admirable, but in my humble opinion if you don't care to shine that much and stay with the value its ok. The only problem in that case is that you won't have that much recognition
